What Is an EVP? Classification, Capture, and Critical Evaluation
Electronic Voice Phenomena remain one of the most debated forms of paranormal evidence. We break down the Class A/B/C classification system, the recording conditions that produce the most reliable results, and the critical listening process VSPR uses before any clip is logged as evidence.
Of all the forms of evidence collected during a paranormal investigation, few generate more debate than the Electronic Voice Phenomenon — commonly known as the EVP. Captured on audio recorders, heard only on playback, and often absent from the environment at the time of recording, EVPs occupy a strange middle ground: compelling enough to have driven decades of serious research, yet ambiguous enough that skeptics and believers rarely agree on what they actually represent.
At VSPR, we treat EVPs as one data point among many — never as proof on their own, but never dismissed without careful analysis. Understanding what an EVP is, how it is classified, and how it can be misidentified is essential to conducting responsible paranormal research.
The term Electronic Voice Phenomenon was popularized in the 1960s and 1970s by researchers including Konstantīns Raudive, a Latvian psychologist who recorded tens of thousands of audio clips he believed contained voices of the deceased. Raudive's work, along with that of Swedish film producer Friedrich Jürgenson — who first reported hearing anomalous voices on a nature recording in 1959 — laid the foundation for EVP as a field of study. Since then, researchers worldwide have documented millions of recordings, and the phenomenon has become a cornerstone of modern paranormal investigation.
An EVP is defined as an anomalous voice or sound captured on an electronic recording device that was not audible to those present at the time of recording. This distinction is important: sounds heard in real time are not EVPs. An EVP exists only on the recording — discovered during playback, often after the investigation has concluded.
The most widely used classification system for EVPs divides recordings into three classes based on clarity and intelligibility.
Class A
A Class A EVP is clear, distinct, and easily understood by most listeners without coaching or suggestion. The words or sounds are audible at normal volume, require no audio enhancement, and multiple independent listeners agree on what is being said. Class A recordings are rare and represent the strongest category of EVP evidence. When VSPR logs a Class A clip, it has passed review by at least three team members listening independently.
Class B
A Class B EVP is audible and appears to contain a voice or intelligible sound, but requires some degree of volume adjustment or listener interpretation. There may be minor disagreement among listeners about specific words, though the general content is often agreed upon. Class B is the most common category and makes up the majority of EVPs logged by investigators worldwide. VSPR treats Class B recordings as supporting evidence — meaningful in context, but not standalone proof.
Class C
A Class C EVP is faint, heavily obscured, or so ambiguous that listeners frequently disagree about whether a voice is present at all. These recordings may contain something — or they may be noise artifacts, audio compression artifacts, or the result of pareidolia, the brain's tendency to find meaningful patterns in random data. VSPR does not publish Class C recordings as evidence. They are retained in our case files for reference but are not presented to clients or the public as documentation of paranormal activity.
The quality of an EVP is only as reliable as the conditions under which it was captured. VSPR follows a strict recording protocol designed to minimize contamination and maximize the evidentiary value of any audio collected.
Before any recording session begins, investigators conduct a thorough environmental survey of the location. This includes identifying sources of ambient noise — HVAC systems, plumbing, traffic, wildlife, neighboring structures — and noting them in the case log. Any sound that can be explained by the environment is eliminated from consideration before analysis begins.
During a session, investigators maintain strict silence protocols. All team members announce their movements, whispers, and any incidental sounds in real time — "investigator moving," "door creak," "stomach growl" — so that these sounds can be identified and excluded during review. Recorders are placed on stable surfaces rather than held in hand, which eliminates handling noise. Multiple recorders are run simultaneously in different areas of the location so that a sound captured on one device can be cross-referenced against others.
VSPR uses digital recorders with high dynamic range and low self-noise. We avoid consumer-grade devices with aggressive noise reduction processing, which can introduce artifacts that mimic voice characteristics. All recordings are reviewed at full resolution before any compression or format conversion.
The review process is where most EVP claims either hold up or fall apart. At VSPR, every audio file from an investigation is reviewed in full — not just the segments where investigators asked questions or reported activity. Anomalous sounds are flagged and logged with a timestamp, the recorder ID, and the room or area. Flagged clips are then reviewed independently by a second team member who has not been told what the first reviewer heard. This blind review process is critical: knowing what someone else heard before you listen significantly increases the likelihood of auditory pareidolia.
If both reviewers identify the same sound independently, the clip advances to a third review. Only after three independent confirmations — with agreement on content — does a clip qualify for classification and potential publication. Clips that pass this process are then subjected to a final round of alternative explanation testing: Is the sound consistent with known audio artifacts? Could it be radio frequency interference? Could it be a sound from outside the building that was not noted in the environmental log? Could it be a team member's voice recorded from another room?
The most common source of false EVPs is not fraud — it is the human auditory system. The brain is extraordinarily good at finding patterns, and it is especially primed to recognize the sound of human speech. When presented with noise — white noise, pink noise, the hiss of a digital recorder's noise floor — the brain will often construct the perception of words where none exist. This is auditory pareidolia, and it is the single greatest threat to the integrity of EVP research.
Suggestion makes this worse. If a reviewer tells you "listen for someone saying 'get out,'" you will almost certainly hear it — even if the recording contains nothing but static. This is why VSPR's blind review protocol exists. It is not a formality. It is the most important safeguard in our entire evidence evaluation process.
Radio frequency interference is another significant source of contamination. Digital recorders can pick up fragments of radio transmissions, cell phone signals, and wireless device communications. These fragments can sound remarkably like voices and are often mistaken for EVPs by inexperienced investigators. VSPR logs all known RF sources at each location and conducts baseline recordings before any session begins to establish the ambient RF environment.
EVP research is not without its critics, and their objections deserve honest engagement. The most substantive critique is that there is no verified mechanism by which a disembodied consciousness could imprint a voice onto a magnetic or digital recording medium. This is a fair point. We do not have a satisfying answer to it. What we can say is that the phenomenon — anomalous voices appearing on recordings in locations with reported paranormal activity — is documented, repeatable in the sense that it occurs consistently across investigators and locations, and not fully explained by known audio artifacts in every case.
We do not claim that EVPs are proof of life after death. We claim that some recordings contain sounds that cannot be explained by the environmental conditions, the equipment used, or the behavior of the investigators present — and that those recordings warrant documentation and further study.
