ITC: Instrumental TransCommunication and Its Place in Modern Research

Instrumental TransCommunication encompasses a range of techniques — from spirit boxes to digital dowsing apps — that attempt to facilitate real-time communication with unknown entities. We examine the history of ITC, the skeptical arguments against it, and why VSPR continues to include it as one tool among many.

Paranormal investigation has always been shaped by the technology available to it. In the nineteenth century, investigators used slates, planchettes, and darkroom photography. In the twentieth, they turned to reel-to-reel tape recorders and electromagnetic field meters. Today, a growing number of researchers rely on a category of tools collectively known as Instrumental TransCommunication — or ITC — to attempt real-time interaction with whatever may be present at a location.

ITC is a broad term. It encompasses any method that uses electronic or digital equipment as a medium for communication with unknown entities. Spirit boxes, digital dowsing applications, Ovilus-style devices, and even certain uses of white noise generators all fall under the ITC umbrella. What unites them is the underlying premise: that an intelligent, non-physical presence can manipulate electronic signals, audio streams, or random-number outputs to produce intelligible responses.

History

The concept of using technology to bridge the gap between the living and the dead is not new. Thomas Edison, in a 1920 interview with Scientific American, reportedly expressed interest in developing a device sensitive enough to detect communication from the deceased — though no such device was ever built or documented in his papers. Whether the quote reflects a genuine research interest or a misattribution that grew over time, it captures something real about the era: the early twentieth century was a period of extraordinary technological optimism, and many serious thinkers believed that the boundary between the physical and the spiritual might eventually yield to scientific instrumentation.

The modern ITC movement traces its roots to the same researchers who pioneered EVP study. Friedrich Jürgenson and Konstantīns Raudive both experimented with radio-frequency methods in addition to standard audio recording, attempting to tune receivers to frequencies where anomalous voices might be more readily captured. Their work inspired subsequent generations of researchers who developed increasingly sophisticated approaches — including video ITC, in which anomalous images are sought in the static of analog television sets, and computer-based ITC, in which text or images are sought in random data streams.

The Tools

Spirit Box

The spirit box — sometimes called a ghost box or Frank's Box, after its creator Frank Sumption — is the ITC tool most commonly encountered in contemporary paranormal investigation. A spirit box works by rapidly scanning AM or FM radio frequencies, producing a continuous stream of audio fragments, static bursts, and brief snatches of broadcast content. The theory is that an intelligent entity can manipulate this stream to produce words or phrases in response to questions. The rapid scanning rate — typically several bands per second — is intended to prevent any single broadcast from being heard in full, so that coherent responses can be attributed to something other than ordinary radio reception.

Digital Dowsing Applications

Digital dowsing applications operate on a related but distinct principle. Rather than scanning radio frequencies, these apps use the device's sensors — accelerometer, magnetometer, GPS, microphone — as inputs to a random or pseudo-random word-generation algorithm. The premise is that an entity can influence the device's sensor readings in ways that bias the output toward meaningful words. Some apps also incorporate audio analysis, attempting to detect anomalous sounds in the environment and translate them into text.

The Skeptical Case

The skeptical case against ITC is substantial and deserves honest engagement. The core objection is that spirit boxes and similar devices produce a continuous, high-volume stream of audio fragments, and that the human brain — primed by expectation and the power of suggestion — will inevitably find meaningful patterns in that stream. This is the same auditory pareidolia problem that affects EVP research, but amplified: with a spirit box, the investigator is listening in real time, in an emotionally charged environment, with a strong expectation of receiving a response. The conditions are nearly ideal for generating false positives.

Critics also note that the radio fragments produced by a scanning spirit box are not truly random. They are drawn from actual broadcasts, which means that words and phrases from news programs, music, and talk radio are constantly cycling through the audio stream. A skilled listener — or an unconscious one — can easily mistake a fragment of a weather report for a direct response to a question about the location's history.

These are valid objections. VSPR does not dismiss them. We include ITC as one tool among many precisely because we recognize its limitations, and we apply the same critical evaluation framework to ITC responses that we apply to EVPs and other forms of evidence.

How VSPR Uses ITC

When VSPR conducts an ITC session, we document the session in full — audio and video — so that the complete context of any response can be reviewed. We note the question asked, the elapsed time before any response, and the content of the audio stream in the seconds before and after the response. We look for responses that are contextually specific: a name, a date, a reference to a historical event associated with the location, or an answer to a question that could not have been anticipated from the audio stream's content at that moment.

We also look for corroboration. An ITC response that aligns with an EVP captured on a separate recorder, or with a physical anomaly documented by another investigator at the same moment, carries significantly more weight than an isolated response. Convergent evidence — multiple independent data points pointing in the same direction — is the standard we hold all of our findings to, and ITC is no exception.

Field Reference — Rippavilla Plantation, 2010

Our investigation at Rippavilla Plantation in September 2010 included an ITC session using a digital dowsing application. During that session, several responses were captured that were contextually specific to the location's Civil War history and could not be readily explained by the application's standard word pool. Those responses are documented in our case file and are referenced in the video of the session available on our Investigations page. We present them not as proof, but as data points that warranted documentation.

The question of whether ITC works — whether any electronic device can genuinely serve as a conduit for communication with the non-living — remains open. We do not know the answer. What we do know is that dismissing the phenomenon entirely, without rigorous investigation, is no more scientifically defensible than accepting every response as genuine. The honest position is to document carefully, evaluate critically, and remain open to evidence that challenges our assumptions in either direction.

ITC is not a shortcut to answers. Used carelessly, it produces noise and false confidence. Used carefully — with full documentation, critical review, and a clear-eyed awareness of its limitations — it can occasionally produce something that is genuinely difficult to explain. That, for VSPR, is reason enough to keep it in the toolkit.
